Grand Cayman, the North Sound and everything the boats reach

The sandbar is waist deep. The rest is a boat ride.

What a morning at Stingray City costs, which snorkel stops come with it, and whether the bio bay is worth a second night out.

The sandbar day

Three ways to stand in the North Sound next to a stingray.

The same stretch of water, three different mornings. What it costs to board each one, and how much of the day it takes.

Where the day happens

Grand Cayman is small. The good water is all in the North Sound.

The island runs about twenty two miles end to end, so everything below sits inside an hour of George Town. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are a short flight further out and belong to divers rather than day boats.

What sells out first

The Grand Cayman trips more travellers book than any others.

Stingray City

Stingray City: which boat, and how early.

Everything at the sandbar →
★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 1,477 travellers on the most-booked trip

Southern stingrays gather on a shallow bank a couple of miles off the north shore, where the water is chest deep and the bottom is white sand. What changes between trips is the boat, the hour, and how many stops come after.

The standard

A shared boat and two snorkel stops

half day· from $56· shared boat

The common shape: time on the bank, then Coral Gardens and one more reef stop before the run home. The early departures reach the sandbar first.

Three stops

Add Starfish Point and the north shore

3 to 4h· from $63· shallow all day

This version swaps a reef stop for a knee-deep bank covered in cushion sea stars, usually with time at the Rum Point bar afterwards.

Your own boat

A private charter for the group

half or full day· quoted per boat· you set the hour

Charters price the hull rather than the head, which starts to add up at six people. You choose the departure time, and that is what decides how busy the bank is.

What it costs

What a day out on Grand Cayman actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. The island is not cheap, and the gap between a seat on a shared boat and a hull of your own is the biggest decision on this page.

Under $50

Entry tickets, the distillery pass and the short sightseeing runs out of George Town.

$50–150

The core of the island: sandbar mornings, three-stop boats, the caves and the bio bay.

$150 and up

Private charters, deep-sea fishing and full days with the boat to yourselves.

Only here

Three Grand Cayman days with no substitute.

Beach bars and reef snorkels exist on every island in the region. A waist-deep bank full of wild rays, a bay that lights up when you paddle it and a dry cave system under the bush do not.

North Sound

The Stingray City sandbar

Southern rays have gathered on this bank for generations, from the days when fishing boats stopped inside the reef to clean their catch. The water is chest deep at most, the bottom is pale sand, and the rays come to the boat rather than the other way round. Boats run all day, and the bank is quietest before the mid-morning fleet arrives.

After dark

The bio bay

Micro-organisms in the North Sound flash when the water around them is disturbed, so every paddle stroke and every hand through the surface leaves a blue trail behind it. Real darkness is the whole requirement, which puts the good nights around a new moon and away from cloud. Trips go by kayak, by clear-bottomed boat, or with a mask on.

Under the North Side

Cayman Crystal Caves

Three chambers of stalactites and a still underground pool sit inland under the North Side bush, known to people who live here long before they were opened to visitors. It is a shaded walk on made paths rather than a scramble, which makes it the standing answer to a windy morning when the boats are staying in.

Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is the base camp, not the day out.

The west shore holds the hotels, the dive shops and most of the pickups. It is a good place to end an afternoon and a poor place to spend a whole trip, because everything worth booking leaves from somewhere else.

A boat of your own

Cayman charters are priced by the hull, not the head.

Past about six people a private boat usually beats six seats on a shared one, and the departure time becomes yours. These are the ones travellers keep going back to.

Book ahead

Four Grand Cayman bookings that will not wait.

Most of this island can be arranged over breakfast. These four run on moon phases, small boats and departure times that take no interest in when your flight lands.

  1. 01Night Bioluminescence Snorkel TourThe glow needs a dark sky, so the nights around a new moon fill first and the boats are small.
  2. 02Cayman Crystal Caves Tour in Grand CaymanEntry goes in guided groups on set departures, and the gate is a drive out to the North Side.
  3. 03Private Charter 34ft Express Cruiser Stingay City Reef SnorkelingA charter is one hull for one party. In season the captains people ask for are booked weeks out.
  4. 04Stingray City Experience Plus Two Snorkeling Stops on Grand CaymanThe bank is busiest while ships are in port, so the early departures are the ones that go first.
Ship days

What to book when four ships are anchored off George Town.

A busy cruise call puts thousands of people on the same sandbar between ten and two. The island has three answers: go early, go private, or spend the day on the other side of it. The north and east shores barely notice.

A first week

The order a first week on Grand Cayman usually falls into.
